In a Tribune Co. financial call with analysts, Randy Michaels, the companies Chief Operating Officer, stated that the Tribune papers will start to employ fewer journalists and that the changes will be happening quickly. The ‘so called’ new and improved make up of the Tribune papers will consist of more maps, graphics, lists, rankings and stats, with hopes of improving the reading experience and casting a wider readership net. - No wonder James O’Shea was fired from the LA Times, the Tribune Co. was changing its mindset long before this.-
In the case of Tribune Co., they are not only cutting back the number of journalists (many papers have already done that), but they are making a step to change the content makeup to what they feel is more engaging. Moreover these changes require the Tribune to move away from the traditional text heavy news content – what they’ve known/done for years. This entire situation makes me wonder how many other newspapers will follow suit, as they all scramble to maintain and grow their property share.
